Introduction to Pingdingshan University

Pingdingshan University (PDSU), ratified by the Ministry of Education of China and managed by the Government of Henan Province, is a full-time university. Standing on the Guoding Hill and overlooking the Baigui Lake in Xinhua District, Pingdingshan, it takes pride in its beautiful natural environment and rich humanistic cultural atmosphere.

The PDSU grows up from Pingdingshan Normal School, founded in October, 1959. In August, 1977, junior college classes were attached to Pingdingshan Normal School, and in 1984 it was named Pingdingshan Teachers Training College. In May, 2004, approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to be a tertiary education institute, Pingdingshan University. In November 2012, the university passed the qualification evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education. The university, adhering to the school-running orientation for the regional economic and social development and the cultivation of application-oriented talents, is committed to building a high-level application-oriented university with its own distinctive characteristics. The PDSU owns two campuses at present, covering an area of 1,546,000 square meters (154.6 hectares)，including the building area of more than 710000 square meters. Its teaching equipment is worth 310 million yuan (RMB) and there are 3.084 million books in the library. There are 21,349 full-time students and more than 1,700 faculty members, including more than 1,200 full-time teachers, with over 1,000 of them with doctoral and master's degrees, and nearly 500 teachers with senior titles. The university has more than 200 excellent teaching talents，including second-level professors, experts enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, outstanding experts of provincial management, special professors of Henan Province, academic and technical leaders of Henan Province, young top talents of Central Plains, famous teaching teachers of Henan Province, doctoral supervisors and master supervisors, etc., and more than 300 outstanding talents from industrial enterprises work here as part-time teachers. It is fully equipped with cultural and athletic facilities, including a PE training hall, a concert hall, a studio, etc.

Persisting in serving local industries, the PDSU has formed such a disciplinary layout as is dominated by some engineering or applied disciplines with multidisciplinary coordinated development. The university has 19 teaching units and 56 undergraduate majors, covering nine disciplines such as engineering, management, science, arts, medicine, teaching, economics, law and art. the PDSU focuses on the construction of professional groups in disciplines such as intelligent electrical and information, chemical and new materials, cultural and communication, teacher education, medical and health care, modern services, biology and medicine. More than 100 undergraduate teaching quality projects at or above the provincial level were approved, including 2 national first-class professional construction sites, 14 provincial first-class professional construction sites, 1 national first-class course, and 44 provincial first-class courses.

The PDSU owns powerful research institutes and technological development bases. There are currently five provincial-level key disciplines, including digital economy, news and communication, energy power, biology and medicine, and design. There are also two key laboratories in Henan Province, including the Henan Province Key Laboratory of Ancient Ceramics Research and the Henan Province Key Laboratory of Ecological and Economic Woody Plant Germplasm Innovation and Utilization. The IST-701 wireless discharge positioning system developed has replaced imported products in terms of functionality. The system adopts non-destructive testing technology to develop a multi-channel detection system for the substation grounding grid, which improves the efficiency of corrosion detection of the substation grounding grid by more than 10 times, achieves precise positioning of corrosion branches of the grounding grid without excavation, and makes the corrosion detection technology of the substation grounding grid reach the international leading level.The Key Laboratory of Innovation and Utilization of Ecological and Economic Woody Plant Germplasm in Henan Province is based on the construction of the Forest and Flower Germplasm Resource Bank, with the core of serving the high-quality development of forestry, and the main research direction of solving the key breeding technologies, new variety cultivation, and promotion demonstrations that restrict forestry. The laboratory aims to promote the introduction and cultivation of innovative and applied talents, and support the coordinated development of economic and ecological economic woody plant industries. It has won the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and the Liangxi Science and Technology Progress Award from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and has undertaken over 50 projects such as the Central Finance Forestry Science and Technology Promotion Project, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Henan Provincial Germplasm Resource Bank Construction, and the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Forestry Development, making contributions to the protection of ecological environment, rational utilization of resources, and sustainable development in Henan Province. It actively connects with local government departments and enterprises and institutions, providing theoretical and intellectual support for the development of local economic and cultural undertakings in terms of political consultation, theoretical innovation, public opinion guidance, social services, and other aspects. The Ceramic Institute undertook the Tang Dynasty Flower Glaze Porcelain Reproduction Technology Project, which restored the lost Tang Dynasty Flower Glaze Porcelain production technology for thousands of years and filled the domestic gap; The publication of the "Complete Collection of 20th Century Chinese Ceramic Sculpture" (12 volumes), a national key book for the 13th Five Year Plan, includes more than 4000 representative kiln works from various porcelain regions in the mainland and Taiwan Province in the 20th century. It conducts a systematic and comprehensive study and analysis of the development of 20th century Chinese ceramic sculpture, filling a gap in the field of Chinese ceramic sculpture research; We have conducted research on ancient Chinese pounding balls, showcasing the unique ancient pounding ball culture and promoting the active development of traditional sports. The PDSU's dragon and lion dance and softball have won the gold medal in national competitions for many times. The dragon and lion team has been invited to South Korea and Italy for cultural exchanges, receiving attention and reports from mainstream media at home and abroad. In 2023, the China Dragon and Lion Sports College was established, strengthening the talent reserve for dragon and lion sports and promoting the development of dragon and lion sports in China. The PDSU's Court Music Troupe is the first established in colleges and universities in the Mainland of China. Adhering to the principle of open education, the PDSU has established cooperative relations with colleges and universities in more than 30 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, etc. Malaga Engineering College was approved as the first Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate level non-independent legal institution jointly organized with Spanish universities in China, andPingdingshan University Spanish Language Centerwas approved as the first Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution featuring Spanish in Henan Province. With Pingdingshan Municipal Government, China Pingmei Shenma Group, Pinggao Group Co. Ltd, Dahe Net, China Building Ceramics and Sanitaryware Association, the PDSU develops school-enterprise cooperation and production-teaching integration, and establishes 9 enterprise colleges, among which Nylon New Materials College, Kunpeng Industrial College, Intelligent Power Equipment Industry College, Ceramic Industrial Design College, College of Biomedicine and Health Modern Industry, and College of Energy Electronics and Information Industry are greatly supported by Henan Provincial Government. Ltd, Yakun Group, Dahe Net, ChinaBuilding Ceramics and Sanitaryware Association, PDSU develops school-enterprise cooperation and production-teaching integration, and establishes some enterprise colleges such as Pingmei Shenma College, Pinggao College and Yakun College. Together with Development Research Center of Henan Provincial Government, Henan Bureau for Letters and Calls, and Publicity Department of CPC Pingdingshan Municipal Committee and so on, she has co-built such new think tanks as the Transformational Development Institute for Resource-based Cities, Henan Institute of People's Letters-Calls and Social Issues, Pingdingshan Cultural Industry Research Institute. The PDSU pays much attention to students’ comprehensive qualities and innovative ability, so their extracurricular academic, scientific and technological activities and social practice activities are flourishing.
